Appalled at how the piano had become seriously uncool, Rhodes and Courtin vowed to prove conclusively that the piano was the king of musical instruments. Taking inspiration from the best composers, songwriters, and performers of the last three centuries these two keyboard champions wove together the rapture of classical piano ballads, the dazzling syncopation of boogie-woogie, and much more. The resulting soundtrack leaps from Bach to Booker T and the MGs, and from Debussy to The Doors. But this isn’t just a music lecture but is musical theatre, and the show is a glorious mash-up of musical highlights presented with comedy, absurdity, audience participation, and exuberant showmanship. The high quality of Heist shouldn’t be a surprise given that Rhodes is hugely in demand as an arranger and musical director – and has written four original musicals and arranged two symphonic pops concerts. The equally accomplished Courtin is a classically trained career musician with very eclectic musical interests. Audience feedback has been sensational. One wrote, “The concept was brilliant – a sort of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure-inspired history of piano through the ages.
