Whitebark Pine Awareness Day
Did you know Kicking Horse is home to an endangered species of tree called the Whitebark Pine?
This important species is declining at a staggering rate in the area due to an invasive species of fungus known as White Pine blister rust. To help the conservation of these trees, we have teamed up with the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation of Canada and have already planted over 4000 Whitebark Pine trees!
Parks Canada will be in the plaza with an information booth to talk about Whitebark Pine conservation. Along with the booth there will be displays including cones, cone cages, climbing gear, a GIANT SLING SHOT, and other education tools.
We will also be doing a guided hikes of Kicking Horse’s Whitebark Pines along CPR Ridge and out towards T2 with a host from Parks Canada and the Grizzly Bear Refuge.
Hike #1 – CPR Ridge – meet at the base of the gondola at 11:00am, hike finishes at 12:20pm
Hike #2 – Terminator Ridge – meet at the top of the gondola at 12:30pm, hike finishes at 1:30pm
