British Columbia Magazine - Destination Golden, BC

During this amazing winter adventure David Webb from British Columbia Magazine walked with wolves at the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre, went skiing with both Purcell Heli Skiing and at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, and sampled the culinary delights around town. During this trip he was met up with those who know Golden the best to find out why this mountain town is the ultimate winter destination.

Wolves are following us through the woods near Golden, British Columbia. Specifically, a hyperactive beige-coated young male and an older ash-grey female with obvious arthritis. I’m unworried. I know these canines by name: Scrappy Dave and Maya. More importantly, I know the names of the wolfpack Alphas: Shelley and Casey Black, owners of Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre and the nononsense duo who lead this canis lupus hike on a snow-crusted forestry road near the Blaeberry River. Along with providing photo-ops and a rare opportunity to interact with a grey wolf, the impassioned Blacks educate guests on the important role these oft-maligned animals play in our ecosystem. At a time when B.C.’s wolf culls are drawing international ire, it seems fitting. Here in the mountain community of Golden, I’m continually served a higher education about a place I thought I knew, yet, as it would turn out, I’d barely scratched the surface.
